Client Stories
Case described here is real, but names have been changed to maintain confidentiality.
Neela, having learned about Mai Family Services through our website, contacted us about her abusive marriage. She was concerned about her safety and the safety of her infant child since the abuse was escalating. Neela was on a dependent visa so she could not work nor did she know how to drive. Mai Family Services helped Neela devise a “safety plan” (emergency responses in case a situation gets out of control). We helped her understand her legal rights as a dependent and explored future options with her. Neela decided to file for divorce and enrolled in school while simultaneously raising her child. She is now employed and able to provide for herself and her child.

MISSION
Mai Family Services seeks to raise awareness of the problems facing the South Asian community in Michigan and to provide support services in the areas of partner and family violence, substance abuse, mental health and senior issues through confidential and culturally sensitive intervention.
VISION
MaiFS envisions offering a broad spectrum of culturally sensitive, preventive and intervention services to build healthy and strong South Asian families and communities in Michigan.
Mai Family Services was established in 1986 to provide assistance to Asian Indian families and individuals in need. Since it was formed, Mai Family Services has expanded to offer services to all South Asians in Michigan.
In an effort to provide Prevention and Intervention Services, MaiFS fights against the Domestic Violence (DV) and Mental Health issues through community outreach and education programs in addition to offering confidential counseling.
Our case workers offer nonjudgmental, empathetic and culturally sensitive counseling and support. If needed, a case worker or a volunteer will accompany clients to provide support, interpretation or assistance in navigating through the legal system by helping with paperwork. Transitional Housing Assistance is provided to clients of domestic violence (DV). Referral services are provided to Emergency shelters, Family Counselors, Therapists, Psychologists & Psychiatrists, Family Law & Immigration attorneys, General Physicians, Job training/ Employment assistance, and Social services.
