Giving is receiving and generosity is contagious.

As the Coronavirus continues to spread around the world, it is inspiring to see the many ways community is coming together to support each other during these perilous times regardless of physical-distancing.
Mai Family Service feels honored and privileged to get continued support of its community in many ways during these challenging times.
“There is no way to thank you enough. In times like these when we all must focus on our well-being, you looked beyond yourselves to help the vulnerable individuals. You have opened your hearts and your Giving Hands towards COVID -19 relief fund to help and support the survivors to ease the pain of unanticipated challenges COVID-19 outbreak has brought upon us”.
With the generous support of its donors, Mai Family Services is able to provide help and support to
    1. Clients who lost their jobs due to lockdown, leaving them homeless and penniless
    2. Clients who have been abandoned by their spouses due to economic crisis.

We know that times are tough, but there are still reasons to be optimistic.

Count on us, we are here for you.

MaiFS’ Direct Services team is working hard to provide the support our community needs during these hard times, may it be Domestic abuse, depression due to loss of job or losing a family member. Count on us to seek the help you or your loved ones need.

Staying home is a proven safety measure for most of us but not for our clients.

“We know that anytime an abusive partner may be feeling a loss of power and control it could greatly impact how victims and survivors are being treated in their homes”, says Katie
Ray-Jones, Chief Executive of the National Domestic Hotline.

Many countries have seen a significant rise in the number of calls made to hotlines. We do know that social isolation from family, friends and community leads to an increase in domestic violence.

Why, then, has Mai Family Services (MaiFS) not seen a similar rise in the number of calls from victims of domestic violence?

Our Direct Services team began to ponder the issues which are possibly contributing to why victims are not reaching out to MaiFS during these difficult times.

    1. Since the quarantine began victims are under 24/7 surveillance by their abuser.
    2. Most are on dependent visas and are 100% dependent on their spouses for all their basic needs such as food, shelter and clothing.
    3. Many have children and worry about how they will care for them particularly because they are not eligible for any benefits.
    4. A call to the police for help could lead to an arrest, jail and a subsequent deportation which could necessitate a return to the home country.
    5. A return home would not necessarily result in support but rather blame and shame further victimizing her.

The issues are significant and cause for much concern.

If you know someone or are someone being subjected to domestic violence please reach out to MaiFS, we are here to help ease your burden.

Shelter-in-place is not safe for Survivors of Domestic Violence

During these unprecedented crises, isolation at home that provides the average person safety from the current outbreak, has become very dangerous for Survivors of Domestic Abuse.

For many of us, home symbolizes a space of love and safety. Unfortunately, it is not the same for survivors when they are trapped inside the house with their abusers for days or weeks on end. Their very own home turns out to be a most dangerous place for them in these challenging times.

To maintain power & control over their partners/spouses, abusers often keep them isolated from their family and friends while controlling who they can talk to and when. Owing to current situation, survivors are deprived of any privacy because they are tethered to their abusers 24/7.

That could be one of the many reasons that we are not experiencing an increased call volume as projected or anticipated in our daytime call for help. Survivors may not feel safe or don’t have safe opportunities to contact us while being watched at all times.

Please call us at 248-477-4985 or any Domestic Violence helplines (local/national) if you need help. We are here for you!

    Stay Strong & Stay Safe!
